Summer Lawn Mowers Needed
The Board of Maintenance is asking for volunteers to mow the parts of the lawn close to the church and school that are not cut with the tractor. The church owns a self-starting, self-propelled mower. Volunteers should sign up to provide this service for a month. Sign up at the narthex table. For more information, call Dewayne Goodrow (429-9054).

This Month’s Door Collection
Door collections are accepted once a month as a way to help worthy causes that are not normally covered by our regular weekly gifts. Our April collection of $529.00 was gathered for the Sunday Service DVD Fund. The May door collection will be taken on May 11th.

The Exaltation Challenge (“Mind over matter?” or Soul over mind and matter?)

Athletes will say it. People living with pain will say it. Highly motivated people in almost any area will say it. “It’s just mind over matter!”

A strong-minded person can stay focused and be so “single-minded” that he or she can overcome a whole variety of obstacles, except the obstacle of sin and sin’s consequences. Only Jesus could overcome that obstacle for us, and He has!

Now, the Scriptures encourage the Christian, the person whom the Holy Spirit has led to trust in Jesus alone for salvation, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)

“With all your heart” is emotion. “With all your mind” is intellect. “With all your strength” is commitment. But what is “with all your soul”? Your soul is your very essence; who you are. It is everything that leaves the body and goes to heaven, your whole person and personality. Your soul, then, is what makes your body, brain, heart and strength alive! The Christian soul wants to exalt the Savior!

By the grace of God we have been redeemed, body and soul, by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, our Savior. To love Him is to exalt Him, to lift Him up, to worship Him.

The Psalms are very instructive for their parallelism. The second line repeats the message of the first line. Consider just four examples. Psalm 34:3 “Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together.” Psalm 99:5 “Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His footstool; He is holy.” Psalm 118:28 “You are my God, and I will give You thanks; You are my God, and I will exalt You.” Psalm 145:1 “I will exalt You, my God the King; I will praise Your name forever and ever.”

What is “exaltation” of our Lord? It is “Glorify Thy Name,” as we love to sing. It is worship. It is giving thanks. It is praise. But it is not just words. It’s faith-motivated actions in every single area of our life, in our heart, in our mind, and in our soul, and therein lies our strength.

It’s not just mind over matter! It is a redeemed soul over mind and matter! “My believing soul, guided by the Holy Scriptures, wants to, therefore I will, and therefore I can,” all by the grace of God. It won’t be perfect in this lifetime. It’s not doing the impossible, but doing the real. “I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
